Dwelling in Christ

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,

singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

What do you have memorized? Some people can name all 50 states at the drop of a hat. Some know the books of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Others remember the phone numbers of all their friends and family (a rarity now). My grandmother could quote Longfellow and the New Testament with equal ease.

Our world increasingly discourages memorization.  It’s too difficult, something done in the dark days before the internet, and just vain repetition anyway. But, what better way to let the word of Christ dwell in us richly than through memorization? When a verse is memorized, it becomes a part of us. No books or phones are needed. A solitary walk in the woods can be a moment to sing “Holy, Holy, Holy,” rejoicing in God’s magnificent creation. Cooking dinner turns into an occasion to…
